Feed Formulations

Feed formulation is the essence of animal nutrition and its welfare. Feed formulation refers to determining right blend of ingredients and additives in order to create a compound feed to meet the daily nutrients requirement of targeted species. The nutrient requirement varies with species, also varies with different life stages. Various ingredients which are nutritionally balanced, pellatable, palatable and easy to store are used to formulating the balanced feed.

The basic requirements for the feed formulation are

  • Nutritional requirement of the species
  • Age wise feeding phases and feeding habits of the species
  • Locally available cost effective raw material with their nutritional values
  • Nutrient utilization by the species from different raw materials used in feed formulations
  • Feed consumption time
  • Inclusion of needed feed additives to balance the diet
  • Desired feed processing type

About 50% of the variable production cost in animal production is feed. It is therefore essential that feed formulations are accurate because once feeds are formulated and manufactured; it is often too late to remedy any mistakes or inaccuracies without incurring significant expenses. Thus in order to optimize the feed composition for better results it is essential to formulate the feed expert service and advice. This will ultimately reduce wastage and production cost resulting in higher profits to farms.

Feed Milling

Converting raw material into feed is the most important value addition in animal industry. Feed mill bio-security implementation can minimize the risk of introduction of biological zonotic occupational hazards at every step of manufacturing process. Sanitary (hygienic) practices in the food industry involve systematic control of environmental condition during production, processing, storage, distribution, preparation and consumption of foods. Such control will prevents contamination of end product by microorganism, insects, rodents, other animal pests, foreign objects, chemicals.

Animal Feed Must

  1. Contains all the necessary nutrients required by the animals.
  2. Clean, hygienic, free from contamination
  3. Palatable and acceptable by the animals
  4. Standard structure for animal to take, chew and swallow
  5. Able to be stored for certain period of time
  6. Should not be damaged during long transport
  7. Does not change in quality during prolonged storage.
  8. Easy to handle and deliver to animals.
